COMMUNITY GROUPS
Asians and Friends world gathering set for Cleveland
Claveland's gay community comes into world focus as Asians and Friends Cleveland, the local chapter of an international network of social organizations for gay Asians and their friends and partners, hosts an international convention in 1998.
"Cleveland isn't usually used in the same reference as London, Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York," said Asians and Friends vice-president Howard Gollop, referring to other international convention host cities. "But the international board decided last week that our group and the city of Cleveland has what it takes to host a great three day weekend in gay Cleveland."
The International Friends Weekend convention, made up of Asians and Friends from around the country, plus members of other Asian groups in Canada and Europe, was held this year in London during Labor Day weekend. There, the Weekend's governing board met with a Cleveland delegate to assess the city's ability to host the convention for Labor Day weekend 1998, against bids by Philadelphia and other cities. The 1997 convention will be in Los Angeles.
"They were apparently pleased and surprised with our gay infrastructure," said Gollop. "I suppose people always assume Columbus is Ohio's big gay city because it has a lot of bars. But the greater Cleveland/ Akron areas not only has some 35 gay clubs, we have at least 50 per cent more gay social and civic groups than any other metropolitan area in Ohio and surrounding states."
or.
Columbus has an Asians and Friends ganization, though it does not have officer or regular meetings.
Between 200 and 500 men and women are expected to attend the Cleveland Interna. tional Friends Weekend, to be held at the Sheraton City Centre Hotel. Gollop said his group plans to make use of Cleveland's s many cultural resources, gay and otherwise, in rounding out the activities.
In addition to holding several functions in Cleveland's growing Chinatown area, the convention will include tours of the Flats, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Lesbian and Gay Community Center, and the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds one of the most comprehensive and rare collections of Asian art in the Western hemisphere. The group is also working with one of Cleveland's downtown bars to host special Asians nights for the convention, like Buddha Lounge in Los Angeles or Asia Club and N'Touch in San Francisco
"For one of the highlights, we are working with the Goodtime III cruises for a Sunday dinner dance,” said Gollop. “We'll be inviting the entire area gay community to join us." Another highlight for the general public will be a pageant that includes international gay Asian music and dance and possibly perfor mances by the North Coast Men's Chorus.

Relief and peace of mind are the result of coming out
by Linda Malicki
Cleveland-Hundreds. Literally hundreds of coming-out stories have been told to me over the years. Funny coming-out stories. Tragic coming-out stories. Successful coming-out stories. Coming-out stories that weren't really comingout stories because no one actually came out! Coming-out stories from parents, children, transsexuals, bisexuals, and radical lesbians.
Throughout all these stories, once the initial trauma was past, what

was left was a sense of overpowering relief. Because when it comes right down to it, living a major lie with the people that you care about takes a hell of a lot more energy than allowing yourself to be yourself. Living a life full of the fear of exposure and the imaginary consequences that accompany it is much, much worse than dealing with a concrete situation. Consider it.
